  • American Legion Barbecue: Saturdays only, by the side of Route 1 in North Bethany, near the National Guard base, just follow the smell -- chicken and ribs, great stories and friendly people.

  • Baja Beach House Grill: (302 537-9993) -- 109 Garfield Parkway, in Bethany -- decent Mexican, and Happy Hour drink and food specials -- great breakfast too -- (Frommer's) -- www.bajabeachhouse.com.

  • Bethany Blues Barbeque Pit: (302 537-1500) -- 6 North Pennsylvania Ave., in Bethany -- won two 2005 Best of Delaware awards, one for barbecue and one for ribs -- www.bethanyblues.com .

  • The Chalkboard: in Market Place at Sea Colony -- brand new, took the place of The Big Easy.

  • Cottage Cafe: (302 539-8710) -- Route 1 between Hickman Plaza and Market Place at Sea Colony, a block from the house -- good burgers and basic stick-to-your-ribs food, but avoid the late night karaoke -- (Frommer's) -- www.cottagecafe.com.

  • Kingston Grill: (302 539-1588) -- North Pennsylvania Ave. and Campbell Place, in Bethany -- award-winning country French food, on the upscale side.

 

  • Magnolia's: (302 539-5671) -- 191 Cedar Neck Rd., Bethany Beach -- north on Route 1,  left at the last stoplight in town (Fred Hudson Rd.), and then turn right at the T onto Cedar Neck Road -- an old favorite updated and more "casual but elegant" -- also has a raw bar -- www.magnoliasrestaurant.com.

  • Mango's: (302 537-6621) -- Garfield Parkway and the Boardwalk in Bethany -- slightly upscale Caribbean-inspired food -- location makes it a great place for happy hour, or for watching the Elvis impersonator at the Bandstand -- www.mangomikes.com.

  • The Parkway: (302 537-7500) -- 114 Garfield Parkway, in Bethany -- one of the better restaurants in Bethany, known for high-quality American cuisine -- www.parkwaydana.com.

  • Patsy's Casual Gourmet Dining: (302 537-2433) -- 121 Campbell Place, in Bethany -- features "Key West"- inspired cuisine. Voted 2002 Best Restaurant at the Beach in the Washington Post readers survey -- www.patsysgourmet.com.

  • Sedona: (302 539-1200) -- 26 North Pennsylvania Ave. in Bethany -- A Delaware Today "Best of Delaware" critic's choice -- Southwestern-themed dishes with a focus on seafood. Menu items include Chilean sea bass, ostrich, elk, antelope and wild boar, and filet mignon -- call for reservations -- (Frommer's) -- www.fusion-sedona.com/sedonamain.html.
